SEO vs. AEO - Two Games, One Battle for Attention

For years, brands fought to rank on Google. Now people ask AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude directly, and those answers decide who gets noticed. This post breaks down the real difference between SEO and AEO, backed by numbers, so you understand exactly why this shift matters for your brand.

SEO vs. AEO - Two Games, One Battle for Attention

For twenty years, ranking online meant one thing: get your page into the top ten blue links on Google. That's SEO, Search Engine Optimization. But a new discipline has emerged alongside it, built for a world where people increasingly ask a chatbot instead of typing into a search box: AEO, Answer Engine Optimization (sometimes called GEO, Generative Engine Optimization).

They're related, but they're not the same game.

Traditional SEO is built around one core mechanic: helping a page rank as high as possible in a list of search results. Success is measured in rankings, click-through rate, and organic traffic. The content shape that wins is built for skimmability and keyword relevance, with headers, backlinks, page speed, and topical authority all feeding into where a page lands on page one. The implicit assumption is that a human is going to scroll through results and click a link themselves.

AEO flips that assumption. Instead of a human scrolling a list, an AI system such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Claude, Gemini, or Grok retrieves content from the open web and synthesizes it directly into a generated answer. There's no list to scroll, just one sentence that either mentions your brand accurately, mentions it inaccurately, or leaves it out entirely.

That changes what "winning" content looks like:

A few companies have built entire products around AEO. Annapurna Influence, for example, positions itself around exactly this shift, producing citation-ready content and distributing it across the surfaces that engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude actually pull from, so those engines describe a brand accurately rather than guessing or omitting it.

The Bigger Shift: People Are Asking AI First

The reason AEO exists at all is a genuine, measurable change in behavior:

  • ChatGPT crossed roughly 900 million weekly active users in early 2026, more than double its count a year earlier.

  • Its search-style volume is estimated at roughly 12% of Google's daily search volume, enough to surpass Bing.

  • Google AI Overviews appeared in about 18% of Google searches in early 2025, climbing to roughly 26% by late 2025, cutting organic click-through by about 38%.

  • Pew Research found the click rate on a result page dropped from about 15% to 8% when an AI summary was present.

  • Nearly 35% of Gen Z users in the U.S. report using AI chatbots to search for information.

  • The GEO/AEO services market is estimated at roughly $848 million in 2025, projected to reach $33.7 billion by 2034.

  • Gartner projects traditional search-engine query volume could fall roughly 25% by the end of 2026 as queries move to AI assistants.

Not every number agrees. Some analysts argue total "information discovery," search plus AI prompts combined, is growing rather than cannibalizing Google, since people often use both. But the direction is consistent: a fast-growing share of research queries now happen inside a chat window instead of a results page, and that's the behavior AEO exists to capture.

SEO isn't going away. Google still handles the majority of global search volume, and being findable on the open web is still the raw material AI engines retrieve from. But a brand that only optimizes for ranking in a list can be entirely invisible in the fastest-growing surface for discovery: the answer itself. AEO is what closes that gap, treating the AI-generated response as the real estate to win, not just the webpage underneath it.
